8.2 speaker profile (multichannel)

Hi,

I recently purchased the multichannel version to calibrate a sound installation consisting of an 8 satellite speakers + 2 subwoofer system.

I'm aware this is an uncommon setup.

During the initial configuration, I noticed that it's not possible to select the speaker configuration I need to calibrate, and there's no option to customize the setup. The default configuration mode provided is only for a "standard" multichannel setup.

Is there a way to calibrate my 8.2 system? If not, could you please suggest an alternative method to overcome this limitation and achieve good results?

(I was considering calibrating my setup twice, treating it as two separate groups of 4.1. Do you think this is a good idea?)

Thanks in advance for your assistance.

Hi vincenzo.germano

Yes, you should be able to use this approach, and then apply two separate plugin instances (each running a separate calibration profile).

You'll have to consider potential channel delay compensation misalignment between the two instances. Each measurement will detect the channel with the smallest delay and mark it as 0.0 ms (the 0-point reference channel), while the other channels will have various delay readings relative to the reference channel. These values will then be used to compensate for channel delays when the calibration is applied. To make sure two different channels are not being used as the reference point, you'll need to have one of the speakers (the one with the smallest delay) included in both measurements, which will align the reference point between each plugin instance:

  1. Perform the first 4.1 measurement and make note of which speaker/channel is measured as the 0.0 ms reference point
  2. Perform the second measurement in a 5.1 layout, and include the speaker that was measured as 0.0 ms previously
  3. Once the second measurement is complete, make sure that the newly measured 0.0 ms channel is the same one as in the first measurement (the speaker that was included in both measurements). If it turns out to be a different one in the second measurement, then you'll have to go back and repeat the process. Ultimately, you'll need to pin down which is the channel with the smalled delay, so that it can be used as the reference point in both calibration profiles
  4. Apply the 4.1 profile in one plugin instance, and apply the 5.1 profile in the second instance (create a 4.1 mapping for the 5.1 profile, and simply exclude the leftover channel calibration curve)

I hope this helps, I would be interesting to see if you are able to apply the solution correctly. Thank you!
